Voices Unveiled on ROOM: A Sketchbook for Analytic Action

International magazine ROOM features how Afghan students in our Self-Empowerment program are reclaiming education and their voice under Taliban rule.

Since the Taliban took control in 2021, women in Afghanistan have faced gender apartheid. They are prisoners of war in their own homes, banned from school, work and all social life. Female artistic expression has been outlawed. Educated women are now confined to only domestic duties, forced marriages, and child-bearing.

Women must wear a full burka and be accompanied by a male guardian to leave their homes. Discussions about emotions, health, and sexuality are forbidden, and mental health support is inaccessible.

Many women are grappling with poverty and experiencing suicidal thoughts.

Voices Unveiled is here to provide online education, empowerment and mental health support to women in Afghanistan and neighboring countries.
